I just moved into a new house a month ago, and I have been getting my mail forwarded. And the other day...I got mail from Alex Rodriguez and Barry Bonds since I got here. That is right. From A-Rod I got my card returned along with an autographed A-Rod photo and from Barry Bonds I got my card back, unsigned, along with another Bonds card and a letter thanking me for being a fan. So my two least favorite baseball players on the earth do at least, return mail. So now I have heard back from 4 players, Manny (card returned unsigned), Timlin (card returned signed), Bonds (card returend with letter), and A-Rod (card returned unsigned with autographed photo).

Home Run Derby Recap!
Well, I'm back. I hope everyone missed me. I'm starting off today with a Home Run Derby recap and will then have a road trip recap later on today. The quote of the road trip definitely goes to our cab driver the last night who said, "You girls know what the best thing about Detroit is? Chicago is only 3 and a 1/2 hours away". Right on sir, right on.
We have a pregame concert by the Counting Crows, which, whatever, but we do also have....Mike Lowell videotaping the CC with baby Mike Lowell! This is absolutely my favorite part of the HR derby, cute pictures of cute players with cute little kids.
The Home Run Derby starts off with all the players being introduced by the always horrific Chris Berman. Honestly! What does he bring to the table? He's just loud and annoying and I don't know anyone besides Bill Belichick that likes him. I can't wait for him to tell us that a ball is hit to Japan when we clearly see it landing in the bleachers. Grrr. We do, in the annoucements, get our first "Bermanism", Albert Winnie the Pujols. Shut UP!
The Derby contestants were, for the American League, Alex Rios, Vlad Guerrero, Magglio Ordonez, and Justin Morneau. From the National League, we had Matt Holliday replacing the injured Miggy Cabrera, Albert Pujols, Ryan Howard and Prince Fielder.
The pregame ceremony, I imagine could not have gone worse for the ESPN production team. The microphones were all screwed up, I'm sure we were hearing things that we weren't supposed to, no one seemed to know how Willie McCovey was supposed to hand out the bats. They made an old man with two canes stand up to do the whole thing. That being said, I thought the gesture was a nice one, and the players all seemed pretty excited to meet him. Alex Rios shook his hand and said, "Nice to meet you, Sir". I like Alex Rios, he's my pick for the derby. On Sunday in Toronto they had this video montage of Alex Rios, and the PA announcer said, "Let's hear it for our All Star, Alex Rios" and everyone in RF (where we were sitting), stood up and gave him a standing O. It was a nice moment before the Toronto fans started yelling at us.
Matt Holliday is in the running for my new non-Red Sox boyfriend.
Barry Bonds loves Peter Gammons apparently. Barry could almost be described as, well, jovial. He was nice, almost considered charismatic in his interview. He's trying to win everyone over for when he gets Hank's record. Barry says that he's disappointed people judge him by what a third party said. I haven't finished Game of Shadows, but from what I've read, I'm pretty convinced he's guilty. He says that he has, "The utmost respect for Hank Aaron" and understands that, "Hank has a life" and doesn't want to follow him around the country waiting for him to hit the HR.
Next up was Magglio Ordonez of the Detroit Tigers. I was hoping he'd tear both ACL's during his swings, but instead he sucked. In Detroit they do this, Magggggllliiiioooo, OH EEE OHH, Maggggllllliiioooo, OH EEE OH song everytime he's up. It's almost as annoying as Hip Hip JORGE in the Bronx, and just as gross.
We then had a fantastic interview with A-Rod, who put on a suit for his big prime time appearance. He said he, "Had dinner in about an hour". He didn't say if he had it with Cynthia or Joceyln. He also said, "NY has been great, there's something special about putting that uniform on day in and day out". A-Rod, they hate you. You are so opting out. Cut the BS.

In a bizarre turn of events, ESPN has a guy from ESPN Deportes interview Vlad in Spanish, and then translate what he has said. I'm pretty sure that Vlad speaks English. A bizarre night from the ESPN production team all around.
All Star game tonight, Peavy and Haren starting it off, and this time, it counts. (whatever)

Even the New York Times loves Mike Lowell;
After Saturday’s game, he wore a gray T-shirt that said “Red Sox Strength.” When a reporter asked him what he had said to Derek Jeter as they walked back to toward second base after the injury to Mientkiewicz, Lowell answered with a deadpan look and a reference to Friday’s game.
“I told him I made one play off him yesterday and he has Wang hit me in the hand,” Lowell said.
When some listeners were not too sure how to take his remark, Lowell looked at one of the press credentials and finished his thought (and at least one of their articles) by adding, “ ‘Ha, ha, ha,’ he said jokingly.”

*Doug Mientkiewicz was kept overnight at Mass General last night with a concussion, cervical sprain, and a broken wrist. I am absolutely, 100% shocked the Yankee trainer didn't collar and board him and send him directly to the ambulance. It was entirely possible with the way his neck twisted and hit the pavement that he had broken something. Red Sox MLB had this to say, "I feel bad for Doug. You don't want anything like that happening. We go way back, I mean, I played against him when I was 15 years old in high school. We hit together this offseason, and I've got a lot of respect for him."
*Lowell also took out Robinson Cano who thought it was a "dirty" play but Joe Torre thought it was fine. Not that I care what either one of them think. Also, it says here Michael has a WS ring from 1998 for playing a few games for the Yanks that year. *Here's the game report on a rough one at the Fens yesterday, where Curt pitched good enough to lose.

The Ramblings...
*To lead off for this latest batch of ramblings, some words about everyone's favorite dirt dog, who I did not talk nearly enough about this week. (I hate when my job gets in the way of my blogging).
- Being there when Trot was introduced quickly moved its way into my favorite Fenway moments. I won't keep you wondering...
1. The Sox coming back against the Yankees on Red Auerbach night and Ok-a-jima coming in for the save.
2. Walk off against the Texas Rangers last July.
3. First Red Sox game. 1990, and the Sox clinched the pennate.
4. Trot coming home.
5. Mother's Day walk-off earlier this year.
- I didn't get to see it till the next day, but the little ceremony for Trot and Kathryn honoring them for their work on the Jimmy Fund was nice. Dr. Steinberg loves stuff like that.
- Trot mic'd up for NESN before the game and him asking everyone whose path he crossed, "How's your family?" (how great is he?)
- I loved how Curt and Josh stood at the back of the mound and waited for Trot to get his ovation both of the first two games. Very nice.
- I did not love how Jonathan made the 9th interesting. So, we all know how Jonathan now comes into Wild Thing, and then when he gets to the mound, Shipping up to Boston comes on. Well, I guess the Shipping up to Boston thing was also Dr. Steinberg's idea...the thought Wild Thing wasn't indimidating enough. I could not disagree more. I was the 2nd Yankees game @ the Fens this year, and when Wild Thing came on, everyone went absolutely nuts, then, the song ended when the batter came up, and everyone kept singing another line or two. That, combined with the best closer in the game and a 96 mile an hour fastball is intimidating.
*Mr. President of bush league and Mrs. Rodriguez took a walk around Boston Common yesteray. Mrs. A-Rod rushed to his side in Boston, and had dinner with him last night at Grill 23 before heading back to the Ritz. I'm sure the blond was his assistant. (be sure to click on the pictures in that last link).
*As for the Red Sox, I mean, could anyone have wished for anything more 50 games in? I don't think so. Everything is just going well. I'm sure we'll cross our rough patches, but this team is the real deal. (::dodging lightening bolts::)
*Just for the record, I am 11-4 this season. After starting out 0-2, I have rebounded nicely. Also, I am 6-0 in May. That my friends, is a .733 winning percentage.
*Shaughnessy says that Red would have liked A-Rod's yell against the Jays. No word on whether he would have liked the blond.
*Pat's had passing camp yesterday. They also announced Training Camp will start on the 27th.
I have missed that lovely gray cut off sweatshirt Bill.
*A large continegent of media was there to catch Randy Moss. Mike Reiss's notebook has the players still shocked and saddened by the loss of Marquise Hill, and also talks about where Adalius Thomas will fit in with the linebacker corps. Karen Guregian also has the Pats dealing with losing Hill. *Former Patriot OG Joe Andruzzi has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and has begun treatment at Dana-Faber in Boston. Thoughts and prayers for him.
*LeBron has taken over the Cavs / Piston's series, scoring 48 last night, and 29 of his teams last 30 points (what!?!). The Cavs now lead the Pistons 3-2 after starting off 0-2. If the Piston's lose, I'd like to ask the fine City of Detroit to not burn down the Ritz Carlton, and if the Piston's win, I'd like to ask the fine City of Detroit to not burn down the Ritz Carlton.
*Billy Donovan is jumping ship at Florida and heading to coach the Orlando Magic. I have a few problems with this. But mainly just one. All those kids on Florida should be free to transfer. You get recruited by the best coach in college basketball and then he rides off into the sunset. You should be able to, too. Either that, or all coaches who want to change jobs should have to sit out a season.
*One reason why fantasy baseball makes being a fan more and less fun all at once. Carlos Betran is going for an MRI today after he left the game last night following a collision. You can guess whose fantasy team Carlos suits up for.
(This is a real tragedy for my team. We are currently only 6 points out of 7th place {we're moving on up}. I had a good meeting with my pitching staff the other night, followed by them pitching 17 scoreless innings on Wednesday night. Manny is starting to come around, and now we have to deal with the injury bug).
*Former Celtics Assistant Coach Jim O'Brien has been named head coach of the Pacers. I always liked him. And his K-Mart suits.

*An NFL study links concussions to depression. I'm shocked having multiple brain injuries and having your brain bleed can cause complications down the road. Really. I'm shocked.
*I feel really bad for the Steeler's coach who forwarded the porn. I mean, he's 61...a grandfather, and he said, "I'm not very good at these machines and I hit the wrong button". Poor guy, he's not very good at these machines!
*A list of other baseball players and their girlfriends. (Well not really)
A source to the Enquirer said Romo had made the same request for space previously, but this time "Carrie thought that they were moving closer to a more committed relationship." Romo's latest move means the coupling is likely over, as "Carrie wants a firm commitment from Tony."
UPDATE: The NATIONAL LEDGER reports Ted Casablanca of E! Online is claiming Jessica Simpson is to blame for the breakup: "Tony invited (Jessica) to Dallas, and she’s going. Of course, he doesn’t want Carrie to find out." The two are reportedly "already spending lots of time together, as in entire weekends."

*Okay, hopefully this extended blog update makes up for my week of slacking. I'll be at Fenway tonight for Wang @ Wake. Hopefully the knuckler will be dancing this evening. And if it isn't, can we at least bring Donnelly in in relief to throw one at A-Rod's rib cage?

In case you forgot...A-rod is a little bitch.
A-Rod does some bizarre take out slide to take care of Pedroia last night. Which, didn't end up mattering as the Sox took care of MFY once again.Manny and Mike Lowell homered and Tavarez pitched well on his 34th birthday.
Eh, does this feel 1/2 hearted? I'm too bummed out about the C's to write something great. But I will say to Boston fans everywhere, "Now don't be sad, cause 2/3 ain't bad"

Curt updated his blog to say what he had to say about CHB's misrepresentation of his quote.
His reaction is exactly what I was saying yesterday, in his position, what else would you have wanted him to say? "Well, we were going to win the World Series, but now, well, we're screwed!"
My favorite part of this is, "I’ll take the Texan we got and pit him against anybody in the game over the next 5-10 years. He’s special and starting to show people a glimpse of what he’s going to be."
Also, I agree with what SG said yesterday, "There's finally a villain on the 2007 Yankees. Just like the good old days. I was tired of talking myself into despising A-Rod and Posada."

*We all know how I feel about him, but I mean, how great is Tom Brady? Tom restructured his contract so that they could add Randy Moss and still come in under the cap.
*Dan Shaugnessy says that love is blind when it comes to us Boston fans. Here is the thing with this article, he starts off strong, saying that we are blind when it comes to the Patriots acquiring Randy Moss, and that if the Sox had signed Barry Bonds this off season, we would have gotten on the bandwagon, and if the Sox sign Roger Clemens, then he'll go back to being the Rocket we all know and love.
First of all, on Barry, I will never, ever, root for Barry Bonds. It has nothing to do with steriods, because, who really knows who is on and who is off and who has been on the juice. Do I think Bonds cheated? Yes. Am I sure that all my favorite players never did? No. So, I don't hate Barry Bonds because he's a cheater. I hate Barry Bonds because he's a dick.
Dan then says to bring on Terrell Owens. Um, no, because Rodney already says that he would never let T.O. in the locker room. And, whatever Rodney says goes. (which, if anyone can find the Rodney quote about T.O. and wants to put in the comments, please do).
As for Roger, I think we've all accepted the fact that one stat is the most important to Roger, the $$. It was never about being a Yankee for Rog, it was about the $$. Sure he wants to be close to Koby, Kole, Krispy, Knight, Kreme, but, when it comes down to it, $20 mil for a few months work isn't a bad deal. I don't think its about the love of the game for Roger, I think its about a love of the zero's adding up at the end of his bank account statement. That being said, what team out there has a comparable rotation to Schill, Beckett, Dice-K, Rog, and Wake? Um, no one. For Roger, it's about the money, for me, a lowly entry level customer service rep making 30 grand, it's about walking into Yankee Stadium wearing my 2007 World Series shirt. And if Roger is going to get me there, well, I'm that easy. (But I will, under no circumstances, own a Clemens shirt).
As for A-Rod, I personally always really liked him when he was a Mariner and a Ranger. I think that he was stupid to give up the chance to be the greatest SS of all time to be a Yankee. I think it isn't his fault he signed that deal that would cripple any team's payroll not in NY or Boston. I think it would be hard for me to cheer for him. That being said, if Barry ends up hitting 777 and A-Rod can hit 778, I'd take it.
Then there is Bill Laimbeer and Ulf Samuelsson. Now, most of the time I don't pay too much attention to what goes on on Causeway Street, (except Disney on Ice, I love Disney on Ice). There aren't any NHL or NBA teams that I like more than the C's and B's, those sports just aren't quite my thing. But, I know two things. And that is that everytime a WNBA game comes up during a channel check and Bill Laimbeer is coaching, my dad makes a comment not appropriate for others ears, and that Ulf hurt Cam Neeley, and that the name Samuelsson still makes Bruin's fans everywhere cringe, so, to say that they could have suited up for the hometown team and been accepted, is well, bullshit.
And, also Dan, we didn't turn on Johnny, Johnny turned on us. We would have been fine if he signed with any of 29 teams. There's just one that isn't okay, and he knew that and did it anyway. I'm pretty sure I could live pretty well for the rest of my life on the 40 mil the Sox were offering, so, I'm sorry if I'm not oozing with sympathy.
Manny is Manny, you can either get annoyed when he doesn't run out a ground ball, or you can accept .300-35-120 and move on. Sometimes it is better to move on.
We can be negative about Randy and his past transgressions, or, we can trust that Bill and Scott knew what they were doing, and that Tom wouldn't go through the trouble of restructuring his contract for someone that wasn't worth the effort. Personally, I love the idea of Moss and Stallworth lining up on opposite sidelines and a fully healed Malroney in the backfield. Also, I don't agree with the fact that this move solidifies that Troy Brown is gone. Troy can play defense and our defense backs have't been the most durable in years past. If Troy wants to play, Troy will be on the Patriots.
*The Pats also signed a bunch of college undrafted free agents yesterday, outlined in Reiss's blog.
*Chris Carter says Randy will be fine in Foxboro.
*David Brown (who writes from some newspaper called South Coast Today?) has a good response to the media over reacting over the Patriots drafting /signing. (I really liked this one).
*Rob Bradford talked to Papelbon who, poor guy, only makes 400,000 grand this year, talks about his future with in the game. (He will be eligable for arbitration after 2008).
*Tavarez wants Dice-K to teach him how to throw a cut fastball. Edes also has this...
Papelbon's younger brother, Josh Papelbon, was not perfect in April, but he came close. The younger Papelbon, pitching for Single A Greenville in the South Atlantic League, had five saves, and held opponents scoreless in eight of his nine outings. He allowed three earned runs in the one outing he was scored upon, so he has an ERA of 2.61 . . . Sunday was Jacoby Ellsbury's first day off this season. The Portland outfielder has hit safely in a career-high 13 consecutive games, batting .404 (23 for 57). He has reached base in 23 straight contests dating to Aug. 27, 2006. His .455 average (30 for 66) leads all minor leaguers, and he ranks first in the Eastern League with 30 hits, 10 doubles, and a .507 on-base percentage. Ellsbury has started 15 of Portland's 16 games this season.
Think Lester and Josh hung out when he was in Greenville? I'd like to think so. Also, some weekend this summer we should do a little Portland Road Trip, and go shopping in Freeport. (Northface, Coach, and Dooney and Bourke outlet. What more could you possibly want?)

Ramblings from my excedrine filled head from last night and a couple links...
*I'm pissed no one hit a Yankee last night after Pettitte hit Youk...Curt had the perfect opportunity to hit Mr. April and instead gave up a GD HR.
*My favorite chants from the night...the "Yankees Suck" chant after we took the lead...the loudest of the night. The "You're no Jeter" to A-Rod before lined softly to second, and "Ok-a-jima" when he was closing it out.
*Caught the highlights at Copperfields after...Coco didn't have a chance to get A-Rod's HR, A+ for effort though...Also, Matsuzaka's face was PRICELESS after Okajima got the last out.
*Katelyn and I had quite possibly the most annoying / stupidest man on Earth behind us.
*My favorite text from last night, "It's official Mariano Rivera is my favorite Red Sox" from KP.
*Good to see the Captain get the bat going (ours not theirs, obviously). (10 too!).
*I hate the hit and run with nobody out. Because if something gets screwed up...a la J.D. getting gunned out right before Tek's HR it sucks. Of course, Lowell hits a double and Drew scores I'm not making this argument (but, hindsight is always 20 / 20).
*I got some goosebumps during the Red Auerbach thing and Bob Cousy throwing out the first pitch. Seeing all those championship banners never cease to amaze me.
*Reasons I hate headline writers..."Crisp was man with a plan: Clutch hit makes up for missed catch". No way anyone short of Yao Ming could have made that catch, and even then I'm not sure.
*Gordon has a good game report, as always.
*I started reading Shaugnessy's article today...just to see what it said, and surprisingly, I liked it, I thought it was a good effort, then, I got to this...
There were ghosts of Yankees past rattling around the yard in the first eight innings. Schilling, who needs an editor more than he needs a pitching coach, coughed up a couple of gopher balls to Rodriguez (12 homers and 30 RBIs already, folks) and Boston hitters weren't able to do much with Pettitte, who last started a game against the Red Sox during the (gulp) 2003 American League Championship Series.
Seriously Dan? Are you 8 freaking years old? First of all, he doesn't need either. And secondly, could you please find more ways to interject yourself and your petty grudge match into more stories. You write a good lead, start off great, and then I don't even finish the article. I can't imagine that was your intention.

Tavarez is loose

Couple of observations on Julian Tavarez in the hours before today’s game. For one, he stopped during highlights of Mark Buerhle’s no-hitter last night to chat with reporters, unprompted, about his own near no-no with the Cubs in 2001. He took a no-hitter into the eighth against the Pirates on the final day of the season. With two on via walks and one out, Mendy Lopez chopped a meager single to left to end Tavarez’s bid.
Now most pitchers won’t even make eye contact on the day of a start, but here was Tavarez, chatting away amiably. Then, after batting practice, he was one of the only players to stop for a group of screaming kids demanding autographs (David Ortiz was another).
It was just interesting to see Tavarez so loose an hour before a start. It speaks to his personality. Maybe he’s due for a big game today opposite Roy Halladay.
*Devern Hansack got his first L of the season yesterday giving up 3 runs in 6IP. Craig Hansen pitched 1 2/3 scoreless. Lester will make his first start for the PawSox on April 25th against the Rochester, NY Red Wings at 12:05. It's about 6 hours away. Who wants to call in sick next Wednesday and go to the game, then drive home after?
*The D-backs had a handwriting analysis. This was pretty interesting.

Alex, oh Alex, too easy.
Alex Rodriguez has a new book about a boy names Alex who makes an error to cost the team the game and then loses his confidence as a result. I wonder how he ever came up with that idea.Also, this is worth mentioning, a die hard Bear's fan has legally changed his name to Peyton Manning after the Bears beat the Colts.
